Sustainable serving board - small 2

$30.00

These boards are cut from the Matarratón tree, which is commonly used as live fencing on cattle ranches in Colombia. Matarratón trees are pruned back each year (a practice called pollarding) which keeps the size more manageable and actually prolongs the life of the trees. A perfect example of sustainable wood harvesting, the tree regenerates new branches just below the cut line each year. As the cut line (or stub) grows considerably over the years, it hardens and forms intricate markings and crevices that are unique to each tree. Depending on the size of the stub, slices can be used as hot pads, serving boards, or even coffee tables. Each slice has been manually cleaned, sanded, and oiled.

Artists: Eduardo is a civil engineer by training; Lucia, an orchid grower and expert. They now spend their days at El Jardín expanding their mango orchard and raising cattle while living off the grid in the Colombian countryside. Walking across their land, you'll see lines of Matarratón demarcating various pastures.

Size: 10 in x 4.75 in

Weight: Approximately 1 lbs

Region: Antioquia

Care: Clean with water and air dry. Occasionally apply a small amount of olive oil.

Fun fact: Why the name Matarratón (or Mouse Killer)? These trees have unique natural insecticide and rodenticide properties, making them perfect for live fencing on ranches.
