This guacamaya basket is traditional of the Lache tribe in the highlands of central Colombia. Similar to other traditional Colombian coil-weaved baskets, artisans collect leaves and fibers, shape them into thin bushels, and then tightly bind the bundle with fibre until a flat spiral appears. Bright colors are unique to the guacamaya style, likely inspired by a parrot common to the area - la guacamaya! On average, it takes 11 days to complete & is an important source of income for the region.
