“When we honor the Earth, we honor ourselves.”
— L.M. Wilde
We curate inspiration for the home, connecting the creative craftsmanship
of Colombian artisans to people and places around the world.
Each piece celebrates generations of tradition and requires days of manual labor. Much more than decorative pieces, these home goods and jewelry celebrate of the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Colombia.
Homegoods and tableware
Masters of the Barniz de Pasto technique pluck young sprouts from the Mopa Mopa tree. After being cleaned, crushed, and boiled down, the putty is stretched by hand, like a taffy, to create thin sheets of appliqués which are then applied to the vase (see image above) or chest. Finally, designs are hand carved to depict the indigenous cultures, flora and fauna of Colombia. From start to finish, the process takes weeks.⠀
There’s a story like this to every product we sell, making these pieces artisan, often one-of-a-kind.
Bean necklaces and bracelets
Each heritage bean was hand-sowed and harvested in Antioquia, Colombia. Gold beans are created with lost-wax coating, first in bronze and later bathed in 24k gold.
There’s evidence to suggest that many indigenous groups first used these living gems (beans) for adornment and rituals, rather than for sustenance.
Artisans
From solo artisans in their home-based workshops to organized communities of artisans who together as a co-op, each piece on Madre Monte has a human touch behind it.
Sustainable
Raw materials that are locally and sustainably sourced, including stone and clay, along with natural dyes from turmeric, clay, and bright pink spinach seeds. Following heritage techniques, many pieces utilize plant-based materials such as fibers, seeds, dried leaves.
Craftsmanship
Conserving techniques passed down through generations, each made-to-order piece is truly unique and represents considerable manual labor and limitless creativity.
